Platteview Senior Named National Merit Semifinalist

Platteview High School senior Logan Lyons has been named a semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing him among approximately 16,000 students nationwide recognized for exceptional academic performance.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the semifinalists Sept. 9. Lyons earned the distinction based on his performance on the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), putting him among the highest-scoring students in the country.

For Lyons, learning he had reached the semifinalist stage was exciting and something he views as a privilege.

“Not everyone gets the honor, so I see this as a privilege,” Lyons said.

While Lyons prepared for the PSAT/NMSQT, standardized testing has also been a natural strength for him. He said he tries not to put too much pressure on himself academically and instead focuses on a simple approach: doing his best.

That approach extends beyond the classroom. Lyons is active throughout Platteview High School, participating in one-act as part of the sound crew, band, quiz bowl and esports.

The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes high school students who demonstrate outstanding academic ability and strong potential for success in college.

Lyons is Platteview High School’s first National Merit semifinalist since Andre Dominguez received the honor in 2024.

“This is a huge accomplishment and only my second student to qualify in my career,” said Amie Christiansen, Platteview High School counselor for grades 10-12. “Logan is a great student, and we are very proud of him.”

As a semifinalist, Lyons will have the opportunity to continue competing for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships. To advance to Finalist standing, students must complete a detailed scholarship application and meet additional requirements, including maintaining a strong academic record, receiving a recommendation from a school official, writing an essay and submitting SAT or ACT scores.

Lyons is already working on his Finalist application and essay. His family had been following the qualifying scores throughout the selection process, and he had even begun preparing an essay topic in anticipation of the next step.

Approximately 95% of semifinalists are expected to become Finalists. Scholarship winners will be selected from that group, with nationwide announcements beginning in April 2027.

National Merit Scholarships include one-time $2,500 awards, corporate-sponsored scholarships and scholarships sponsored by participating colleges and universities.

As he looks beyond Platteview, Lyons plans to attend college but has not yet decided where. Among the schools he is considering are Harding University and Oklahoma Christian University.

For now, the National Merit recognition adds another significant accomplishment to Lyons’ senior year and gives him an opportunity to continue competing for one of the nation’s most prestigious academic scholarship programs.
